OVERVIEW

Dresden Elementary School, located at 2449 Dresden Drive in Chamblee, Georgia, has served students since its opening September 3, 1963. The school was constructed to alleviate overcrowded conditions at Skyland and Carey Reynolds Schools, and initially was designed to serve grades one through seven. When sixth and seventh grades were moved to the newly designated Sequoyah Middle School in 1996, Dresden became a kindergarten through fifth grade school.Chamblee, Georgia, is one of the most heavily populated and ethnically diverse communities in the DeKalb County School System. The present student body of six hundred forty-one is composed of students from at least twenty countries.


MISSION STATEMENT

Dresden School ensures each student a quality education that will maximize growth and development through collaborative efforts of the school and community in order to become productive citizens.


SCHOOL GOALS
Students will demonstrate the ability to read and comprehend, listen, speak and write effectively and creatively.
Students will improve thinking and reasoning skills in mathematics
Students and teachers will increase use of technology in the curriculum.
Teachers will be given an appropriate vehicle to express and resolve conflict at the lowest possible level.
Parents will increase the amount of time spent at the school in support of instructional activities.
Students will be given the opportunity to demonstrate honor for the feelings and rights of others.
The staff will contribute to the development of instructional budget priorities
Teachers will participate in decision-making regarding the selection and implementation of instructional programs and procedures.
Parents will demonstrate an increased knowledge of their children’s academic curriculum in all areas, thereby increasing their ability to give appropriate feedback.


UNIQUE ASSETS
Parent Education Program (PEEP) – After-school classes provide English acquisition opportunities for non-English or limited-English speaking parents and childcare and tutoring (in math and reading) of their children. Classes meet for 6-7 weeks twice each school year. Transportation, textbooks, and snacks are provided at no cost.
After-school tutorial – Tutorial is provided as a safety net for children who are performing slightly below grade level. Students benefit from a low student/teacher ratio as they work on strengthening weak areas. Classes meet for two hours twice a week for approximately 8 weeks twice a year.
Breakfast Book Club – Teachers read aloud to students or students read to themselves or each other during club meetings before school starts. For every four times that they attend, students earn a book of their choice to keep.
Muffins for Moms/Donuts for Dads -- Mothers and fathers share a muffin or donut and coffee, juice, or milk with their children before school. Moms are invited during the first semester, dads, during the second semester.
Parenting classes – Parents are invited to monthly “Coffee and Conversation” get-togethers to discuss topics of interest to parents. Recent topics have included: discipline, child lures, testing, emotional well-being and domestic violence, and summer learning.
Everybody Wins Power Lunch – Everybody Wins is a national program which partners professionals from the public and private sectors with Title I elementary school students. Once a week reading mentors and students share conversation and good books, one-on-one, over school lunch.
Dunwoody Rotary Club book donations – Each Christmas the Dunwoody Rotary Club provides each Dresden student with his or her own new hardcover book.

Anquinette D. Guthrie, Principal

Welcome to Dresden Elementary School, a school with a diverse student population representing 22 countries. I recently have been appointed the new principal of Dresden, after serving for eight years as our Assistant Principal for Instruction. Dresden made great strides in student achievement during the last five years, and I look forward to continuing these accomplishments.

As the newly appointed principal of Dresden, I bring a continued focus on providing quality instructional programs and ensuring that every effort is taken to make a difference in the lives of all students. The combined support of teachers, students, parents, and the community will go far in helping Dresden to fulfill its mission:

Stephen J. Keith, Assistant Principal
Mr. Keith, a former Assistant Principal at another DeKalb County school, begins his new assignment as Assistant Principal for Instruction at Dresden this fall.



Deborah Satterfield, Counselor
I'm excited about being the school counselor at Dresden Elementary School. As the counselor I am simply a "helper" who is concerned with the academic, social , and emotional well-being of every child. I work closely with parents, teachers, and administrators, so as a team we may provide the best education possible for our students.
Services Offered
Classroom Guidance Every child in the school will receive guidance services from the counselor in the form of classroom guidance lessons as the counselor visits each classroom on a regularr basis.

Small Groups In addition to classroom guidance, skills are also taught in small group settings. It is emphazied that groups are for everyone in the school, and participation does not indicate that a student has a problem.

Individual Counseling Individual counseling is also available to students at any time. Students requiring more than a few individual sessions may be moved to a small group for continued support.

Parenting Classes Parent sessions are held monthly. Parents have an opportunity to benefit from sessions on successful parenting tips, helpful homework strategies and ways to strenghten the parent/teacher communication relationship.

My Essay

Hello, I have a lot of news! First I'm in Miss Lidell's class, second I have to write an essay!!!

What Reading means to me?
Hi, my name is Katherine. I’m eight. Well, today I’m going to tell you a story What Reading Means to me?




It all started long ago. It started when I was three and went to Kindergarden. I leart to read there. But, I stopped. I don’t know why.




It was pre-school time. In Russia (That’s where I from) pre-school means a program for children to get prepared for school. So I started reading.



It was hard when I got to first grade, because we read a lot. We read two,three stories a day. It was hard because Russin is sotimes difficult. Do you want to know why? Well, because there are some letters sound the same but are different. Let’s continue.



Then I came to the United States of America. It was hard to learn. But, mom and dad helped me by checking easy books. My first book was Ten Red Apples .






Now I’m smart! I like to read Fiction and Nonfiction. One of my favorite things to do after I read a book is to find main ideas and some details that support it.(In this sentence it means main ideas.) And also I like to write about that book. And that’s one of the things reading means to me, learning. Learning maen ideas, supporting details,words.



Now let’s talk about words some more. One thing I don’t like is to write words I don’t know, bercause it takes a lot of time and plus you have to reread the book.



I spend about one, two hours reading, because I like to read. Reading is my favorite thing to do! When I read, reading means to me fun, games, and a lot of joy of course! I like to read,to use my inagination, because when I read I imagine what I read.

What happend today ?

Today I have a first punch in my PUNCH CARD. I can't belive that this is me. When I first start it I said to myslelf that I wouldn't have punches at all. But I was wrong. Acsedants happend, but I want that no acsedants would happend to me. I got a friend, Yeralin she got her first punch, too. I think Adrine got his first one, but I'm not shor. My friend Lourdes got zero punches. I got a friend that have three punches all ready. Today he had no recess. Today I had Music. Next, I had recess. Then, I had Lunch.
